Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are young Kindergartners with a thirst for knowledge. They love to explore and observe the world around them. They love to play all sorts of games. They enjoy building things and making all sorts of creations. And even though they are just learning to read, they love books!

My students are budding scientists, writers, mathematicians, artists, peacemakers, and so much more!

They love a challenge, and they especially enjoy working with others to tackle these challenges. The majority of the students at my school are Latinos. Most of their parents are immigrants from Mexico and Central America. There is a small but growing number of Black, Asian, and bi-racial students at my school. My classroom exemplifies this diversity.

My Project

Kindergarteners love to sing. They also love to play all sorts of instruments. Music brings people together. Music brings us joy. Music can also be used to teach a variety of subjects. But the most important thing I plan to do with our new set of ukuleles is to teach students songs of diversity and inclusion. I want my students to know that they are important and they matter. I recently participated in a ukulele workshop for teachers. We learned songs of resistance and resilience.

Music can help us all feel seen and heard.

Music can inspire and uplift. I want to share the songs I learned in the ukulele workshop, such as "What Can One Little Person Do?" and "Sing About Martin" with my students. Ukuleles are the perfect instrument for young children (but they are not only for kids!) because they are an ideal size for little hands. These ukuleles are also durable. That is very important for little ones. This project will make a difference in the lives of my students because it will help them to gain confidence in themselves as they learn to strum and sing. It will build resilience as they get better and better at the instrument. Not only will they will learn about diversity and inclusion through music, but they will share these songs with their families. We all know that when a child really enjoys a song, they share that joyful music with the rest of us.
