it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are part of an underserved community in Sparks, Nevada. Many of my students have experienced hardship and varying degrees of trauma in their lives. That said, my students are optimistic, energetic, inquisitive, and gladly welcome new experiences.
One of my classroom engagement strategies has always been the use of music.
Whether it is playing guitar in the hall during passing periods, or lightly strumming my ukulele to create a calming atmosphere during independent work time, my students have responded in an overwhelmingly positive way to this strategy. Needless to say, I regularly have students ask if I could/would teach them how to play the ukulele.
I would like to start a lunchtime ukulele club at Dilworth Middle School. A couple of days a week I would invite interested students to my room for lunch and instruction on how to play the ukulele. I am confident that the kids would love this opportunity. I also have a few ukuleles of my own that I would loan to students for this club. Who knows, maybe we could play some songs during school events!
