This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a reading interventionist, my primary role is to work with students that are not meeting grade level benchmarks. Although most of my students have not yet been identified with a learning or reading disability such as dyslexia or dysgraphia, the science of reading shows that the same interventions that benefit students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities are also effective in teaching all students to read. My students work incredibly hard to rewire the language centers in their brain to close large gaps between their learning and their peers. And I want to make it easier for them by providing them with the evidence based instruction they deserve.
My students require language to be broken down into rules and given practice with these rules using multi-sensory strategies that engage the language system in their brains and build new pathways.
They work ten times harder than the average child just to keep up.
My Project
All students need targeted reading instruction. However, past primary grades, students that are not proficient in all areas of literacy require a substantial amount of accelerated support to address basic knowledge in orthography, morphology, and vocabulary.
Although schools are closed, reading and learning must continue for our students.
I hope to apply the Orton Gillingham-Structured Literacy training to my direct instruction, whether it is virtual learning or back in the classroom. Students at all grade levels need differentiated reading instruction. By receiving this kind of training I will be able to enhance my own teaching toolbox to ensure my students with specific learning disabilities and identified deficits in reading will receive the necessary multi-sensory instruction to compensate for such substantial learning loss due to COVID-19.
