This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired. Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the ActivBoard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."
Our school is very supportive and inclusive.
My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They are an important part of our school community.
My Project
My students require an organized classroom. The packing tape, masking tape, permanent markers, washable markers will help students see personal and physical boundaries within the classroom. Laminating pouches ensure that visual supports are sturdy.
A structured classroom is a must when teaching students with special needs.
Their classroom should be easy to navigate, organized, and predictable. This helps to reduce behaviors which in turn increases time on task. We model our classroom on the Structured TEACCH program which prescribes clear visual boundaries for all areas within the room. My students use a color coded system. Each student is assigned a color to 1) provide a sense of personal ownership 2) to avoid conflict over space, materials, or other items. The materials we are requesting will help me to create materials for an organized and structured setting.
