This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come excited to learn in two languages as part of our Spanish Immersion Program, which was adopted more than 13 years ago to meet the needs of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Nine years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bi-cultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
Pretend play in kindergarten is time for my student to develop their social skills, feel part of our learning community, regulate emotions, and much more. Most of my students did not attend in person pre-school or had much interaction with other kids their age due to the pandemic.
The dolls, cash register, pretend food, and other toys will provide more structure center activities for students to engage with a classmate.
We still need to keep a safe distance in the classroom and have smaller group of students at each center, these pretend toys will help add more options for my students. They are easy to disinfect or wash at the end of the day and will provide years of hands-on structure play time.
Students will learn about sharing and will have the opportunity to play pretend at school when taking care of the babies that represent their own background, playing store, cooking, building different animals and much more. Please help my students' own imagination take place everyday in our kindergarten classroom!!
