My students need equipment and apparel to match their hard work on and off the court.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from low income families with different backgrounds. They need an avenue to help them with their ever challenging social and emotional needs. Sports is that avenue. My students come to school early for academics and stay late to practice basketball. They work hard in the classroom as well as on the court.
"Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose - it teaches you about life."---Billie Jean King.
My students need a way to work on building their character. They know how to play by the rules and they know how to lose. What they need to learn about is character building and life.
The materials for this project will assist my students with feeling like they belong. The backpacks will be used to store their uniforms when they are not playing a game, and to store their clothes in when they are playing a game. Since most of them have to use public transportation to get to the game, the backpack is a necessity. The socks are designed to provide a proper fit when wearing basketball shoes. Proper fitting shoes decreases the chance of injuries to the students. The basketballs will be used to scrimmage during practice and for warm-ups before our games.
"Apart from education, you need good health and for that you need to play sports." --Kapil Dev.
Being healthy is important. Playing a sport like basketball provides my students with a healthy workout for growing young boys. Sports also builds character, teamwork, and opportunities for better grades. My students can use character and teamwork in the classroom. These materials will assist my students in building the necessary skills to be success on and off the court.
