My students need materials to build STEM knowledge and vocabulary foundation. Pop & Match, Comparing Sizes & Position Word, and science and math books are examples.
Brain research supports the fact that, "Developing brain architecture is rooted in the context of experience and is the foundation for cognitive, social and emotional development."
"Neurons to Neighborhood (2000)"
I hope to use the selected materials to create brain stimulating experiences.
Our learning environment is very inclusive.
I have a multi-age classroom with both transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students. The student population will be comprised of approximately 25 percent English language learners. Students from the special education classrooms and the other kindergarten classrooms will have access to donated materials during mainstreaming. Approximately 40% of population receives free or reduced lunch.
My Project
As a California Distinguished School, the Silverwood kindergarten team is thoughtful of the early literary research to close the knowledge gap.
In our classroom there is a thoughtful and conscious effort to balance the importance of STEM content and vocabulary with learning school readiness skills through play.
Students will interact with teacher led math and science literature that focuses on content and higher level thinking skills. We will use the science themed books to support reading with parents at home.
The classroom will have strong math and science centers that will allow students to investigate concepts discussed through literature, the internet and class discussion. They will play games that further their mathematical skills at the math center so as to bring about a feeling of competence and love for math.
Research has taught us that, "the preschool years may be a time when a 'window of opportunity' opens for experience to have a significant impact on neural development." Handbook of Early Literacy Research.
Providing engaging and exciting experiences through games and learning through play is the goal of my classroom.
I hope that donors, including companies like Chevron, will "Fuel My School!"
