This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"I hate to read." The most dreaded sentence to hear as a teacher! Our community problem at school is: a large group of students who are reluctant readers...they are uninterested in reading and pretend to read instead of actually reading. My students' idea to solve this problem is to create a Reading Reward Rack to encourage reluctant readers! Students will speak with classes and encourage the students to read to earn prizes. Every book completed will earn points towards rewards in the Reward Rack!

Because reading every day helps to increase word exposure and improve vocabulary, we need an incentive to get our reluctant readers involved in reading.

These two occurrences will improve student's reading abilities and improve their general attitude towards reading. The Reading Reward Rack will be filled with prizes for students to choose from when they read books and complete response tasks.

Help my students bring this community service project to life and improve the reading skills of my students and other students at our school.
