My Project

Entering my 35th year of teaching, I am a life-long learner. I believe obtaining the national board certification for teachers is a tool for me to use for improvement in my approach to teaching and building relationships with my students, their families, and the staff working at my school.

Our elementary is a Title I school, what Donors Choose refers to as an Equity Focus School, meaning it is underfunded due to racial and social inequity.

As I am the music teacher serving the total population, this training will directly benefit the entire school community, from ages 3-12, grades Pre-K to 5th.

The specific certification I am seeking is early childhood general music. There are eight standards of excellence:

II: Knowledge of and Skills in Music

III: Planning and Implementing Assessment

IV: Facilitating Music Learning

V: Learning Environments

VI: Valuing Diversity

VII: Collaboration

VIII: Reflection, Professional Growth, and Professional Contribution

Preparing for and implementing what I have learned while working toward this certification will directly benefit my students in the following ways:

• My students will feel safer, and be motivated to extend their knowledge and skills in music

• My students will discover the impact of learning music from other cultures and communities that are presented by their classmates and myself. This will create an atmosphere of equity and diversity

• My special needs, exceptionally talented, and regular ed students will find their educational, musical, and social needs addressed in a more meaningful way

Finally, this will have a life-long impact on the students, staff, families, and music colleagues attitudes about learning, school in general, and music.
