My Students

I teach General Music, Chorus, and Strings at a Title I school where nearly all of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students primarily live in low-income neighborhoods or in military housing. Most of my students do not have access to instruments or formal music education outside of school.

My students are creative, intelligent, and inspired, and I want them to have every opportunity to explore their musical interests and skills in the classroom.

My Project

My 5th-grade orchestra students are soaring through the school year, but we are in need of new materials. The age and quality of violin strings make a huge difference for beginning students, because better materials produce better sounds, stay in tune, and are much easier to play. It is normal for violin strings to break throughout the year, and having spares on hand means students do not have to miss out on playing and practicing time. Rosin is a material made of tree sap that all violin, viola, cello, and bass players use to make their bows grip and play on strings better. All these factors help encourage young students as they are learning a very challenging instrument!
