Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyone can play music. Yet many students can't afford the expenses of being in a school music program. 150 students rehearse everyday on contemporary instruments obtained through donations and grants. These strings, picks and drumsticks will keep these instruments functional throughout the year.
Mr. J's alternative music program provides exciting, alternative, hands-on music classes for middle school students who cannot afford and/or are not interested in traditional music classes.
The program strives to motivate a wide range of students including many who are at-risk to build confidence, attend school and improve their grades. The program is a true model of inclusion and integration and encourages students from every socio-economic, academic and cultural background to join. Learning disabled students, visually impaired students, physically handicapped students, gifted students, twice exceptional students, emotionally/behaviorally disabled students, at-risk students, along with numerous regular education students all rehearse and perform side-by-side each and every day in school. The students attend a Title One school.
My Project
With your support, students will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform on quality, well-functioning instruments. They will be able to develop skills on guitar, bass, violin, drums and percussion. Hundreds of middle school students with a wide range of academic abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds will receive daily, in-depth, individualized musical instruction which is currently only available to students who can afford private lessons and instruments. For many students who do not own instruments, class time is the only opportunity they have to practice instruments and improve their musical abilities. All students will develop the skills and knowledge that can empower them to become lifelong musicians, and will also receive learning experiences that can strengthen their academic capabilities in all subjects.
A majority of students enter this alternative program with no musical background and most do not own instruments.
It is an amazing moment when a student realizes that success is possible and discovers the incredible experience of being an integral part of a great sounding music group. Although the program does not receive funding, instruments are supplied for all students. (through donations/grants) Keeping these instruments in good working order is essential to inspire and guide students.
