This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Guitar, Ukulele, and Mariachi program at GMS continues to grow and flourish as students explore a diverse range of string instruments. With regular rehearsals and performances, the wear and tear on strings is constant. Replacing broken or worn-out strings is essential to keeping instruments in playable condition and ensuring all students can participate fully in class.

The program includes instruments such as violins, vihuelas, guitarrones, acoustic and classical guitars, electric guitars, bass guitars, and ukuleles.

Many students rely on school instruments for in-class and at-home use, and without reliable strings, it becomes difficult to keep up with learning and performance goals.

This program is rooted in culturally responsive music education, offering students the chance to engage with music that reflects their cultural identities, lived experiences, and interests. Students explore genres such as mariachi, classical music, punk rock, reggae, Hawaiian mele, regional Mexican music, blues, R&B, and hip-hop. By keeping these instruments in good condition, students can develop pride in their musicianship and a strong connection to the music they’re learning.

This project ensures that all instruments in the program remain in good working condition, with functioning strings

It supports student learning and engagement by removing barriers caused by worn-out or broken equipment

We want to promote cultural representation and creativity through diverse musical styles and build student confidence, technical skill, and a lifelong love of music
