This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a middle school in a large urban school district. We don't have fancy amenities and we are sorely underfunded, but enrollment increases every year because we consistently outperform district averages in test scores. We've established a reputation as a good school, so students come from all across the city to attend, some riding buses for an hour or more each way.
My students are some of the kindest, brightest, and most enthusiastic that a teacher could hope for, but as a Title I school many of them come from households that cannot afford musical instruments.
One of the hardest parts of my job is telling a saddened student that they don't get to play in orchestra today because their string broke, we don't have any extras, and that we don't have the budget for them.
My Project
The most pressing needs of my program are nothing fancy and exciting, just the very basic essentials. We need things like violin strings, viola replacement bridges, bows, rosin, and instrument cases with working latches so students can take them home to practice. We need clarinet reeds, saxophone neck straps, valve oil for trumpets, and percussion mallets. We desperately need method books and sheet music.
The difference that relatively small contribution can make is enormous.
On a good day in class, everyone in the room is excited because they are experiencing the joy that comes from making music. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of good days because so many minutes are unnecessarily spent scrambling to make sure that everyone has a functioning instrument.
