I teach physical education to over 450 elementary students. My students LOVE to be active and move their bodies. They participate in PE with their whole hearts and all of their effort. I teach them many different skills in the short amount of time that I spend with them each week.
My students are constantly asking me for new sport activities.
They are eager to build their cooperative skills in competitive settings. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to explore new games and sports that they have not had access to previously.
My Project
The requested materials will help my students build and develop striking skills. My school doesn't have any equipment that can help students with these skills. Striking is an essential manipulative skill that students must have to develop physical literacy. Utilizing different types of paddles and balls will ensure that all students, from PreK - 5th grade, can find success.
Striking sports like tennis and badminton are lifetime sports, especially in New York City.
Giving students exposure to sports like these will help them develop their physical literacy. I want my students to have the confidence and competence to play sports like these outside of our PE class. Giving them this experience in a safe space like our class will enable them to develop confidence in their skills, enabling them to apply them to their active lives outside of school.
