My Project

I have been a proud teacher in the Pittsburgh Public School District for the past 18 years. We, as a school and community, have always had students with mental health issues. Prior to the pandemic our district had the resources within the district, as well as partnerships with community health service providers to aid our students dealing with trauma or in crisis. Coming back into school post pandemic was like coming into a different world.

I am requesting yoga mats for our after school Social and Emotional Learning Program.

The mental health, trauma, youth violence, learning loss, and lack of social skills was unlike anything I have ever experienced before. Our staff has since decided to start an after school program for academics as well as social and emotional learning (SEL). Our kids are our future; they need help and deserve better. We have two days of academics and one SEL day. I went through the Breathe for Change program to get certified as a 200 hour yoga teacher and SEL Facilitator.

I am anxious to incorporate yoga, meditation and mindfulness into the program and into my classroom. I hope to give kids the tools they need to self regulate, deescalate, and have positive constructive conversations to work out differences.
