Stretching Minds and Healing Hearts: Yoga for Our Middle Schoolers

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are brilliant, resilient middle schoolers navigating not only adolescence, but the daily realities of living in historically underserved Black and Brown communities. Many of them carry trauma — whether from personal experiences or the systemic challenges that surround them. What they need is a safe outlet to move, breathe, and reconnect with themselves.

Our school is a place of possibility, and my students show up every day with strength and determination.

I want to give them tools that will help them not only survive — but thrive.

This project brings yoga and mindfulness to our classroom, offering a gentle, structured way for students to manage stress, build emotional resilience, and increase self-awareness.

I am requesting:

-Durable yoga mats to give each student a personal space to move and reflect

-Comfortable floor pillows for seated mindfulness and breathing practices

-Supportive yoga blocks and straps to meet students at all ability levels

-A sound bowl to help center and ground the group through sound meditation

-A mat storage cart to keep our space organized and accessible

Yoga isn't just about stretching — it's about healing, connection, and empowerment. Many of our students are experiencing the long-term effects of trauma, and mindfulness-based practices like yoga have been shown to reduce anxiety, improve focus, and foster a sense of safety.

With your help, we can create a consistent, welcoming yoga space where students can breathe deeply, move freely, and begin to heal.
