My Students
I am a first-grade teacher at an inner-city school. I am privileged to work with 28 amazing children who are eager to learn and use any learning tools they are given. My students have a tremendous amount of learning to do this upcoming year, and most of it happens from repetition and practice.
My students like to read, participate, and ask questions!
Working as an elementary teacher in a low-income and high poverty inner-city district is challenging itself. My students face several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Whichever challenge they meet, I strive to provide my students with the creative and meaningful learning experiences they deserve!
My Project
This upcoming school year, my students are going to need a safe place for them to collect their thoughts and emotions. The space will be their new desks due to social distancing. However, at their desks, we can provide hands-on tools to help student cope with their emotions. The hands-on items such as stress balls and fidget toys will be used as stress relievers. They will be kept in their pencil cases to use when needed. Having each student their own stress relievers will help with safety but allow them to take 'meta-moments’ and mental breaks when they feel the need to.
These are stressful times for children & adults, especially those children who may not know how to cope with their emotions after being home for so long away from a school setting.
I want to have a classroom that is welcoming, calming & safe with clean sensory materials, and clean fidgets toys. I want to create a safe space for my students to come and take a moment to identify how they are feeling and also have tools to help them regulate their emotions.
