Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 9th and 10th grade English students are unique, strong, and powerful individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. As a low-income, high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. They bring with them their own personalities, histories, and interests that help make our classroom community an energetic place. While my students face multitudes of hardships, their resiliency is inspiring and motivates me to work hard for them.

What makes these students so amazing is their positive attitudes, motivation to improve, and the ability to use their differences as ways to teach each other, even from a distance!

Each year we work together to grow but this year we are now coming together to overcome another hardship. Over the past few weeks, my students have begun to tackle distance learning for the first time! While they want to be successful, they are also struggling to balance their home responsibilities with tackling information on their own. After speaking to so many, they have expressed how stressed and anxious they are in the current pandemic and I want to help!

My Project

During this stressful and uncertain time, I want my students to know that they are loved and cared for by their community. While I am their English teacher on paper, their social emotional well being is equally, if not more, important to me. Learning from home poses so many challenges that they must overcome. While we are working together to help with the content side of things, I want to be able to do more for them on a personal level by creating stress relief kits.

The kits will be delivered to their door steps to help them navigate this stressful time in their lives!

The kits are designed to help them decompress, focus their energy on something positive, and help cope with the difficult times. Items are also included that can be used with younger siblings they are now in charge of. Additionally, I've included snacks and food for them as many have expressed being worried about food. Lastly, they have fuzzy socks to keep them warm and comforted.
