I need a treadmill, stationary bike, and yoga supplies for our teachers. We spend all day taking care of our students, but I want to make sure we also take care of ourselves.
Our school is located in a rural community about three hours away from a large city. We live in a very small coastal community and many of our students have never left our state. Approximately 30 percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. About 10 percent of our students are identified as special needs.
As we all know, teaching is very stressful job In an effort to improve the health and well-being of our staff, I would like to create a wellness room where teachers can spend a few minutes before school, during lunch, or after school reading, practicing yoga, exercising, or engaging in mindful meditation.
My Project
Teaching is a very stressful occupation and oftentimes teachers are so busy taking care of everyone else, they fail to focus on themselves. Last year I started a yoga class for the teachers at my school. Once a week we had an instructor come in to the media center and lead us in stretching and breathing techniques. We focused on ways to control our breathing, stretch our muscles, and get rid of stress.
This year, our principal is giving us a dedicated space for exercise, but we need equipment.
Through the guidance of our PE teachers and parent volunteers, we hope to train our teachers on how to use the equipment, as well as how to check our own heart rates. By creating a space where teachers can spend a few minutes before school, during lunch, or after school, I hope to provide a safe space for teachers to exercise, meditate, and reflect. Teaching is a profession that requires social and emotional skills on a regular basis. By providing a stress-free zone for our teachers, I believe that our students will benefit in a positive way. When a teacher is feeling stressed, this carries over into his/her classroom and then creates a negative environment for the students. If our teachers are able to spend just a few minutes a day "recharging their batteries" I truly believe our classrooms will be more positive and productive.
