Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, fun-loving middle schoolers from South Los Angeles. This is a special education History class for sixth and eighth-graders.
Though they are in middle school, most are performing well below the third grade level in the area of reading and writing.
Nonetheless, I push my students hard every day to write and read beyond their independent levels. The struggle is real for them and sometimes it's not only due to their academic levels but to outside stressors of everyday life.
My Project
On any given day my kids experience stress or just have an extra amount of jitters that is hard for them to control. This project provides my students with a variety of fidgets that help them relax their nerves.
The fidgets, like a plastic tangle they move with their fingers or textured balls, provide a non-distracting way to give my students the stimulation and relaxation they need to better focus on the classwork.
The way it works is as I greet the students at the door I see the kind of mood they are in. As I begin the lesson I will observe them and determine if the students need a certain kind of fidget. Perhaps they're feeling drowsy because it is the end of the day or with extra talkative energy. I will give them a rubber string that stretches and bends. This will cause them to get their head up and stimulate body movement with their hands, helping them focus their energy and get the stimulation they need in a quiet way. And just like magic, I can see them more focused on the classwork and participating in class.
