Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students represent the broadest possible cross-section of our community. We are a choice school, not an attendance area school. Families choose our school because we are the first public STEM, K-8 school developed in our rural border county.

We are not a school for gifted students, enrollment is not selective, but on a first-come-first-serve basis; we have students from across the full spectrum of abilities, socio-economic backgrounds, and demographics.

Like effectively everyone else across the U.S., we are dealing with the current public health crisis. We try to integrate the scientific method and the engineering design process into all that we do. We apply a trans-disciplinary approach to all subjects and seek to maximize student engagement and empowerment at every opportunity.

My Project

Students during these COVID era times are feeling stress and anxiety in a multitude of different ways. These items are used in our classroom, and I have seen a significant reduction in behavior issues and emotional outbursts. However, they do not last very long when they are sanitized often.

My students are dealing with so much stress, from home issues to feeling they need to catch up on what they have missed in the past two years.

These stress balls and squishies help alleviate a small part of the major issues students currently face in the classroom, at home, and in our community.
