My Project
Students need texts they can access in order to strengthen literacy. Many of the texts students read in school are chosen because they represent a body of knowledge, however, most of these texts are difficult for students, especially multilingual student to access. Dark Life by Cat Falls was written for young adults, so having this text in my classroom will help my students strengthen their literacy with an accessible, thought provoking, and exciting text.
My goals for this text is to provide a enjoyable reading experience that develops vocabulary, reading skills, and overall improve literacy.
When students are able to access a text, they are more engaged, and more engaged readers are better able to strengthen literacy skills. We will build literacy together in classroom discussions about real world concerns middle school students have about belonging and contributing to society that build literacy.
My students represent the growing cultural and linguistic diversity in the United States. Almost half of my students are Latino, many of whom are multilingual learners. They deserve texts that represent this diversity as well as texts they find interesting and accessible, so they can grow their language skills. Most of the texts my students read provide windows into cultures other than their own, but research has also shown that it is important for students to see mirrors of themselves in classroom curriculum. It is my hope Dark Life will provide my students with both windows and mirrors of life that will help them grow to be educated, contributing citizens of our country.
