This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class is a group of wonderfully unique learners! They come to school every day excited to see what we have planned for them! Our program is normally a full day, the children eat breakfast and lunch here at school. This year being what it is, our children come to school a half day. They have a snack with us and take their lunch and breakfast for the next day home.
In September our children come to us with very little school experience and many lack simple fine motor skills.
Some have never used a pencil, scissors or play dough. We continually strive to fill our students with experiences that will help them acquire the skills they will need to succeed in school. We would like to provide them the opportunity to build their fine motor skills and experience. This year due to new cleaning procedures we are unable to incorporate many of the materials we typically use in our classroom. Not only must we provide separate materials for each child, we must use manipulatives that our completely washable.
My Project
With young children using more technology every day, we are finding our children are deeply lacking hand strength. These muscles are built by using them. Holding crayons, pencils, markers and using scissors are all skills that require hand strength. Manipulating small objects and building with blocks and pegs also help.
This year is especially challenging as we must help our children acquire these skills but lack the materials necessary.
In order to stay within guidelines set for cleaning and use of classroom materials we must provide each child with their own materials and our manipulatives must be able to be cleaned. We are unable to use many of the materials we typically put out for our students to explore. We have not received any additional funding to purchase supplies or materials for our children! If we do close school and return to a virtual setting we will be sending home supplies for our children to use at home.
