Strengthening Little Hands: Fine Motor Skill Toys for Kindergarteners

My Project

This grant seeks funding to purchase fine motor skill toys for our kindergarten students, particularly those who need extra support in developing the hand strength necessary for writing and cutting with scissors. These toys will be incorporated into classroom instruction and used during indoor recess, especially critical in our cold-climate community where outdoor play is limited for much of the year. Students who play together gain crucial social and problem solving skills.

Many of our kindergarteners struggle with fine motor skills, impacting their ability to write, use scissors, and participate fully in classroom activities.

Research shows that targeted play with specific toys can significantly improve hand muscle strength, coordination, and dexterity (Marzano, 2007; Ten Steps to Complex Learning). Due to our cold climate, indoor recess is frequent. Traditional recess activities do not always support fine motor development, making this an ideal time for skill-building.

*Improve fine motor skills for all kindergarten students.

*Increase students’ confidence and independence in writing and cutting tasks

*Provide engaging, purposeful activities during indoor recess.

Toys and materials will be reused for future classes. Teachers will share best practices during PLC meetings to ensure ongoing effective use.

By investing in fine motor skill toys, we will give our kindergarteners the tools they need to build foundational skills for academic success. Thank you for considering our request to support early childhood development in our community.
