Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Frustration! That's what many of the parents of my students feel when they try to read with their children. Many of my students are fluent in English, but their parents speak only Spanish. They are unable to spend quality reading time together because of the language barrier.

I work with students who speak Spanish (or another language) at home, and who are acquiring academic language skills in English.

My school is about 60% English language learners, and over 80% below the poverty line. A majority of my students read below grade level. Many of our families come from rural areas of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and other Latin American countries, and come with very little education. These parents really want to help their children become better readers, but feel they lack the skills to do so. Furthermore, since my students have been in US schools for a few years, they have acquired enough English so prefer reading in English, while their parents read and speak only Spanish. This creates a language and literacy gap between parents and children.

My Project

The bilingual books I'm requesting have English on one side of the page, and Spanish on the other. There is a wide variety of types and levels of books, in order to engage all of my students and their parents. With these books as part of my library collection, I will be able to bridge the language gap between parents and children. I currently work with both my students and their parents, and teach the parents ways to read with their children as well as strategies for increasing comprehension. These are simple things they can do at home together. Unfortunately, my book collection right now is limited. With an expanded collection, I will be able to involve more parents and increase the reading abilities of my students. In the past, parents have said the one-on-one time they spend reading at school with their child was invaluable. I worked with one family this year where, for the first time, mom and son were able to read a book together and connect to it because it was bilingual.

These books will not only promote literacy in the home, increase the reading skills of my students, and encourage bi-literacy, but these books will also promote family time and bonding between parents and children.

What an incredible gift you will give my students!
