I work with students who speak Spanish (or another language) at home, and who are acquiring academic language skills in English. My school is about 60% English language learners, and over 80% below the poverty line. A majority of my students read below grade level. Many of our families come from rural areas of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and other Latin American countries. These parents really want to help their children become better readers, but feel they lack the English skills to do so. This creates a language and literacy gap between parents and children. Bilingual books help bridge this gap and allow families to engage in a very important bonding experience -- reading!
