My Project
"Esperanza thought she'd always live a privileged life on her family's ranch in Mexico. She'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home filled with servants, and Mama, Papa, and Abuelita to care for her. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California and settle in a Mexican farm labor camp. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard work, financial struggles brought on by the Great Depression, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When Mama gets sick and a strike for better working conditions threatens to uproot their new life, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--because Mama's life, and her own, depend on it."
Through this project, I am requesting a class set of the award winning novel "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Muñoz, so that my students can learn about compassion through Esperanza's story.
Students will be identifying setting and main characters, analyzing plot and point of view, and making inferences using text evidence. Our unit of study will cover the above mentioned California standards for ELA as well as the California standards mentioned below for SEL (socio-emotional learning):
-Leaning into others’ perspectives with curiosity
-Recognizing and acknowledging the inherent strengths in other
-Demonstrating empathy and compassion
-Showing concern for the feelings of others
-Identifying diverse cultural and social norms, including unjust ones
-Understanding the influences of biased and racist systems and structures on mindset, behavior, and actions
The idea is to build a community that is not just academically competent but also socio-emotionally competent. We believe that there is strength in numbers, as the title suggests, because the more we expose to students to literature about compassion, and the more students we expose to literature about compassion, the more unified we grow as a community.
