This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We need to give our students a voice and a choice in their education if we want to help them be successful. My school is presently bursting at the seams as the neighborhoods around us expand. As we grow, the class sizes grow, making meeting a variety of learning needs difficult.
While we are blessed with many high-ability students, we also have a population of students for whom traditional learning (sage on the stage, read and take notes learning) does not work.
I would like to help bridge this gap by creating a STREAM Lab (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) in my resource classroom.
This would be an area where teachers could come with their class and collaborate with me (and our Instructional Technology Resource Teacher) on lessons which not only meet Virginia Standards of Learning but also place students in control of how they learn and how they show their learning (Gardner's Multiple Intelligences).
My Project
With these materials, students will be able to experience a variety of learning methods.
While some students are able to learn through lecture or text, others need hands-on, free exploration to make sense of content and its relevance to their world.
With the Sphero, students will SEE how degrees affect the shape of an arc. By building with the 3doodler, students will BUILD their spatial relationship skills as they build structures and objects. And by using the littleBits, students will CREATE usable tools while challenging their GRIT.
These materials are the tools we need to provide innovative learning to all.
