My Students
My students are wonderful kids. Most of them are economically disadvantaged. All of them are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition. We are located near two military bases and many of my children are the dependents of deployed military personnel. Nearly 1/4 of the families now receive Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance.
My 4th and 5th grade students come to school every day and try very hard to learn, but they struggle because they need books they can read and resources that our school cannot afford.
Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Over 20% are in ELL and/or Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines and Vietnam, as well as natives from rural Alaska. My students can't afford field trips, so we take field trips on the playground. School is everything for them.
My Project
I am asking for 26 books about scientists and STEM careers, art supplies, and headphones so my students can use the Chromebooks in the library without distracting each other. As part of their library lessons, my students will read at least three books to learn about different scientists. Next, they will use the internet to verify the facts and gather more information about scientific discoveries. After they have basic knowledge, student teams will select a scientist. Using the information they gathered, they will use the art supplies to create a model of a concept or one of the discoveries made by their scientist. They will also create a poster about the scientist and an infographic about the skill set one would need to be a scientist.
My students need to expand their horizons by learning about science, technology, engineering and math careers.
This STEAM project represents an exciting new approach to the science of exploring the creations and discoveries of scientists. My students will also learn about the types of jobs that are available to people with STEAM skills. Many of my students never leave their neighborhood and know nothing about their world. My 4th/5th graders have never explored STEM careers or read about scientists, but this project will give them a basis in architecture, engineering, technology and math. We have no funds for this type of STEAM project.
