Help me give my students games like Otrio, chess, Gigamic Quarto, Gobblet and Guess Who?
In the vast and every changing educational world, classrooms are poorly equipped with technology, games, tools or devices that help to inspire, motivate and encourage student engagement. The use of various resources can aid in active participation, discussion, and stratagem as well as provide lesson opportunities whereby students are able to create and control their own learning through using such resources, games and concentrated efforts to demonstrate mastery of focus, content curriculum, and strategic efforts that improve and increase knowledge. The games will help provide an avenue of intellectual engagement that varies from the typical day-to-day classroom routine and provide connectivity to STEM topics.
The students in my class have diverse socioeconomic lives with a significant set being underprivileged.
Students who are enrolled in my courses do not always have games available in their home. A portion of students come from a home where English is a second language.
Strategic games and gaming is new and often exciting for students who are not exposed to it at home. Games or gaming often takes learning and excitement to a new level where students focus, design, create and demonstrate mastery of critical thinking, curriculum concepts, and focused efforts.
The materials requested will allow all students to show their understanding of strategies associated with curriculum taught. This can be done through justification/debate, demonstration, skill/application and analysis/strategy. For example, students can use Gobblet, checkers and cards to demonstrate whole group or small group mastery of curriculum for memory techniques as well as mapping and math calculations. Chess, Otrio and other games also provide opportunities for learning and allow for curriculum review in a gaming atmosphere where math, mapping and coordinating problems can be used. Teaching, creating, confidence building and supporting education through game use is exciting and produces positive outcomes.
These games will help increase student knowledge, computation ability, hypothesis formation, analysis, and strategy use while providing an opportunity for students to increase their understanding of real life situations where the gaming may be used sporadically, day-to-day or even minute-by-minute and help raise self-esteem, confidence, speed and accuracy of work.
Group activities will be aided by this project and allow collaboration to evolve into learning opportunities. These opportunities provide and encourage student collaboration and learning one from another as well as from the teacher.
