This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are a very active and focused group who are determined to become better mathematicians. My students come from a very diverse working class neighborhood. We are a Title I high poverty school where nearly 76% of the students are on free or reduced price lunch plans. We are a span school, with about 1,000 students ranging in grades from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade. Our school recently became a STEAM academy school, an acronym which stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

My Project

These Math Strategies Practice journals will help give my students many opportunities to practice and apply different math strategies, as well as build their confidence and skills in operations & algebraic thinking, base 10, and mathematical practices. These Math journals will provide me with ready-made problems for my first graders to work on.

These math journals introduce five key first-grade math strategies—like number lines and base 10 blocks—with helpful visual models, and includes 12 practice pages for each strategy—to make sure students truly grasp the concept.

Also, there is also a section for students to explain in writing, why they chose a given strategy to solve their problem. Thank you for reading my project, “Strategizing for Math.”
