This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Mount Pleasant Ski Club is dedicated to providing underrepresented youth from Providence, RI with opportunities to engage in the sport of skiing/snowboarding, build confidence, and develop life skills in an inclusive and supportive environment. Through accessible programming, mentorship, and community partnerships, we aim to break down barriers to outdoor snowsports and winter recreation and inspire young people to discover their potential, foster teamwork, and embrace the thrill of adventure. Our goal is to empower youth to overcome challenges, broaden their horizons, and cultivate a sense of belonging in the winter sports community, creating lasting memories, opportunities for personal growth and a lifelong love of the sport.

Before hitting the slopes, students are provided with everything they need for a day on the snow!

Throughout the season, we provide 50 students to 5 days on snow, learning to ski or ride. Every student is provided with a winter jacket, ski pants, base layer, winter socks, hat, gloves, helmet and goggles. We also provide skis, snowboards, boots and poles! These straps are necessary for our students to safely transport their equipment to and from the mountain and safely on and off our bus. This project also includes other essentials such as wax for skis and boards, deodorizing spray for returned boots and helmets, and a step stool to help us access the upper shelves in our gear closet!

Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many were born and raised in Latin American or African countries and never saw snow prior to moving to the United States. Once here, students rarely leave the city. We began our ski club to provide students with the opportunity to experience the mountains and learn to ski or snowboard. By supporting this project, you help make snow sports accessible for our students!
