My students are hard working and resilient! Through all of the obstacles they face on a daily basis, my students come every morning ready to learn. My class started this year at an average of two grade levels behind in reading and math. I have several students receiving special education services, and most of my class are English Language Learners. Many come from single-parent homes and others don't have a home at all.
I may not be able to control the environment they are coming from, but I can control the environment they walk into every morning.
We work collectively to create and maintain a positive, welcoming, and safe space to learn. Our classroom is more than a community of learners, we truly are a family! I am so proud when I see my students protecting each other and lifting one another through kind words and encouragement. I do my best to provide them with everything I possibly can to create a rigorous, yet safe and loving space to learn.
My Project
I work at a Title I school with a strict supply budget. We are over budget for the year and have been limited to one pencil per student per month. Though my students are very responsible and we have a place for everything, pencils disappear! I have purchased pencils several times in the last few months because they are a basic necessity in a classroom.
Along with the pencil famine, our dry erase markers are now just dry!
We are also running low on supplies like glue sticks and erasers and our communal pencil sharpener now eats pencils instead of sharpening them! The requested items would help my students finish the year off strong!
