My Students

Our school is an inner-city, comprehensive public high school in Richmond, California. Over 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and over 95% are students of color.

The challenges many of our students face are profound and many of my students suffer from chronic trauma.

Despite these challenges, my students are driven and determined to gain musical skill and be the best they can be. My students love studying music room and their eagerness to learn is a constant source of inspiration. They deserve more.

My Project

This DonorsChoose.org project seeks to out fit our music program with a number of important supplies for the classroom. This includes instrument and mic cables, guitar strings, marching band lyres, and flip folders. These are essentials for any band program.

A large portion of this project will go toward buying a class set of straight mutes for our trumpets and trombones.

For those of you unfamiliar with straight mutes, they are metal or treated cardboard cones that held in the bell of a horn by three pieces of cork. When inserted in the bell of a brass instrument, they produce a unique and distant tone that adds an unmistakable texture to a band's sound.

Straight mutes are often required for accurate performance of particular pieces of music. As a band director, on more than one occasion I have found high quality pieces of music for our bands to perform but hesitated and ultimately had to ditch the pieces because our band did not have the mutes to perform the piece correctly. Mutes are that important. With your help, we will no loner have this problem and our bands will be able to faithfully and accurately perform a variety of high quality repertoire as the composers have intended.
