My Students

My students are absolutely wonderful! They are so excited to be coming back to school this year after struggling with the confusion and setbacks caused by the COVID pandemic last year. Our students are from rural areas and some come from poor socioeconomic backgrounds. After a year where some were taught virtually and some came two days a week while others came four days last year, it has all been one huge mess that we are battling to overcome and catch up academically. We know that we have a tremendous job in front of us this year and I want to make sure that I give my students every opportunity to learn while also having fun with the concepts they need to learn and master. I teach all levels of students PreK-5 as the school librarian and along with library skills/research, I teach reading skills and comprehension concepts to students from diverse backgrounds and many levels. I have some students who are autistic, have ADD/ADHD, gifted students, etc. As I work with the different abilities of my students, I want to bring in more resources for them to use to help them learn about the world around them and explore nonfiction!

My Project

When I was teaching my 120 students in grades 3-5, I quickly discovered that many do not have books, magazines, or newspapers in their homes! I was heartbroken to learn this and I want to do something about it! Storyworks is a magazine published by Scholastic and it focuses on literacy: stories, poems, fiction, and nonfiction. It is a very engaging and colorful publication that is sent to the students multiple times during the year. My plan is to use these in class and reinforcing different literacy and reading skills while also giving the students a publication that they can then take home, share with their families and practice with on their own.

Getting high-quality literacy into the hands of students and giving them the opportunity to have their own magazine subscriptions at home is vital to increasing a love for literature.

This project will hopefully accomplish that goal while also giving students something they can keep, practice with, share with their families, and enjoy both in school and at home! Please help me accomplish this lofty goal because, after a year and a half of pandemic restrictions, our students deserve to have some fun materials to work with and call their own! You get to make a difference in their lives!
