My students come from low-income backgrounds, most receiving free/reduced price breakfast and lunch. Most are faced with situations outside of school that make them have to grow up faster than the average child. As their teacher, I want to provide opportunities for them to discover their love for learning and foster their unique thoughts, talents, abilities, and skills.
My students are inspired, creative, and resourceful.
They love when they are given technology, hands-on learning experiences, chances to think outside the box, and opportunities to really showcase their unique talents/abilities that are not always given the attention they deserve outside of school.
These Storyworks magazines will make it possible for each of my students to receive high interest passages at their level. They will be able to engage with the passages by marking them up, enhancing their comprehension. They will be able to individually complete the activities inside, demonstrating their understanding. They will actively read and apply the skills and strategies being taught in the classroom. They will learn to love reading and engaging with a text! These magazines are one short stepping stone to building a classroom of readers who WILL become leaders.
