This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher at a Title I school in Greenville, South Carolina. My school is a high-poverty school where all students receive free lunch and free breakfast.

At my school, "Every Student Counts, and Every Moment Matters!" We want the moments that matter most to be those in which our students learn not only the curriculum but life lessons that will carry them through their teenage years and into adulthood.

The students overcome obstacles every day in our school from language barriers to essential needs, but they still come to school with a smile on their face. I want to make their 5th grade year as special as possible. To do that, I need your help!

My Project

The students will be using these magazines to help them become pros with reading non-fiction text. The Storyworks magazines will be utilized in many different ways. Storyworks will be used first and foremost to engage the students in their reading.

Help me foster a love of reading fiction and nonfiction text in my students through magazines.

The magazine will help bring Social Studies and Science topics we study to life. They will learn what it was like to ride the orphan train or how people survived the great fog in England in the 1900s. They will also be able to see how other kids their age feel about different things in the debate section. In past issues, the students were able to read about how kids their age felt about technology in the classroom, choose a side, and write about it! These magazines are a great way to integrate reading, writing, science, and social studies. Not only will the students be able to practice their reading skills, but they will also be able to read articles that are written with them in mind. These subscriptions will have a technology feature that will allow my students to access the magazines and online tools from the classroom and at home. These magazine subscriptions will help my students, who don't have a lot of opportunities, be able to explore the world from our classroom.
