Storytime & Song: Bringing Music to Life Through Books

Help me give my students 31 books I can read aloud in my music classroom to inspire a love of music, support early literacy, and make learning musical concepts fun and engaging through storytelling.

My Project

I teach an amazing group of students who are curious, creative, and full of energy. Many of them come from low-income households and don’t have access to books or music opportunities outside of school. Despite challenges, they come to music class excited to learn, explore, and express themselves. What makes my students special is their enthusiasm and willingness to try new things, especially when learning feels fun and meaningful.

The 31 read-aloud books I’m requesting will bring music concepts to life through storytelling.

These books will help me teach rhythm, tempo, dynamics, instrument families, world music, and more in ways that connect with students of all learning styles. Some books encourage movement, others explore musical vocabulary or tell the stories of musicians from diverse backgrounds. By listening to and discussing these stories, students will strengthen both their literacy and music understanding. These read-alouds will also help build listening skills, vocabulary, and a deeper appreciation for music.

My goal is to create a music classroom where every child feels included, inspired, and excited to learn. These books will make a huge difference in helping students connect emotionally and intellectually to music. With your help, I can give them the tools they need to succeed—not just in music, but in reading, communication, and creative thinking too.
