Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a class for children with severe and profound mental and physical disabilities. The students range in age from 6 to 8 and come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. The students disabilities include cerebral palsy, epilepsy, vision impairments, and impaired physical abilities. Three of the students use wheelchairs and one student is able to walk. The children all require maximal assistance from adults to take care of self needs and to complete day to day tasks. the children are most interested in colorful, bright, object and objects that have a variety of textures and sounds.

This is my first year teaching in this school. It is a new classroom, so the supplies are limited. The school is willing to buy some materials, but in order to maximize student learning, i have to reach out to other sources. Our theme for the school year in the primary grades is Eric Carle. We have no Eric Carle books in our room, and since we are a special school, we have no school library.

We need a variety of Eric Carle books. These books will be used for our ongoing theme of the year, Eric Carle, and can also be incorporated into our smaller units throughout the year. Eric Carle books are very colorful with big, bright pictures. They are also simple stories, many of which are repetitive. Using a switch, the students can say the repetitive phrases in the books.

These books will give my students the opportunity to take part in a reading and storytelling activity on a daily basis. These are all books that are interesting for children with their beautiful pictures.
