Storytelling With Puppetry

My students need a variety of finger puppets and hand puppets to inspire their imagination, get creative juices flowing for storytelling and writing projects, and put on theater productions in the classroom.

My Students

I see the exciting possibilities that I can make available to my students who need opportunities to explore creative and critical thinking through the arts, especially dance and music.

I teach in a school where the student population is linguistically and culturally diverse, and which services a community with families from all over the world.

My second graders are bright and enthusiastic, each one of them with unique abilities and talents. I find that using the arts is such an exciting and engaging way to channel their abilities, and to reach those learners who may have difficulties with reading and language or grasping math concepts. I am often touched by the level of care and kindness with which all my students help each other in our quest to learn. It comes as no surprise that these children absolutely love the arts. When I introduce a painting project or play music for them on the piano, I can see their heightened interest and excitement.

My Project

In a day and age when video games and digital media compete for our attention, it's become even more important for children to engage their hearts and minds in creative play.

My students need puppets to create stories that will be the groundwork for many of the lessons and activities we will be learning in literature, life science, social studies, and theater.

To that end, I've chosen a wide variety of aquatic and land animals --including a whale, a hedgehog, a cat, and a snowy owl, to name a few--for children to use and think of ways to connect with a unit we will be doing this year on animals and their habitats. It's also my hope that we will be using these adorable puppets for activities in social skills, community building, and conflict resolution. When children use puppets together to create stories, they must work cohesively as a team in order to produce a quality piece of theater. Working in groups, students will sometimes draft scripts for their theatrical productions, or at other times, simply improvise a scene.

Children will also develop fine motor skills, oral and written language, learn the fine art of puppetry, and collaborate closely with their peers. They will fine tune their creative writing and performance abilities by developing characters in depth, thinking of how voice quality and movement can define their characters' personalities. Because the puppets are fun, very visual, colorful, and appealing for a young audience, my students will be able to connect more deeply with academic content, in a way that is personally meaningful to them. Puppetry will be a means to learn in a rigorous and joyful way.
