My Project

I teach hundreds of enthusiastic children the joys of music every year. One of our favorite activities is adding a soundtrack to storybooks. We use Up, Up, Down by Robert Munsch every year. My students slide their mallets up and down the xylophones, bounce them across the bars, and have a wonderful time adding sound effects to our storytelling. What they don't realize is that they are practicing proper mallet grip, hearing and distinguishing high and low pitches while recognizing their locations on the instrument, striking the center of the bars with the correct bouncing motion, following the conductor's cues, keeping a steady beat, and performing as an ensemble. They develop all of these important musical skills simply by reading and adding sound effects to a story.

Using our classroom instruments to create sound effects for storytelling is an engaging cross-curricular activity that helps teach and reinforce many state and national music education standards in kindergarten and first grade.

Best of all, my young musicians think they're just having fun. They don't realize how hard they're actually working while they play and learn.

This project will provide an additional barred instrument so that nearly every student in my larger classes can play a barred instrument at the same time. It will also provide a second storybook to expand our collection of interactive storytelling activities, giving students even more opportunities to learn through music, movement, and literature.
