Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our preschool students are English learners and many of their parents or grandparents are from Mexico, but over the years the population now includes students of Central and South American descent. The community is small and many of these families have been here for generations. My class consists of 20 students.
The excited little preschoolers are in our full day, head start program; some of the students have IEPs and are receiving itinerant special education services.
Overall, ninety-five percent of the school's students are considered low income and receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
Many classrooms have listening centers. Since space is limited in my classroom, iPods are a space efficient and creative way for students to listen to a story. We’ve tried the traditional headphones; the headphones get tangled up and the students need help untangling the wires which interrupts instructional time. The wireless headphones were more feasible; but they had to be charged quite often and sometimes there wasn’t enough time to charge them. However, the iPods are easy, quick, and students can independently start listening to a story.
Listening to a story on an iPod models fluency, pronunciation, and intonation for my English language learners.
It also exposes them to genres of books that they may not usually read without the pressure of having to read it out loud. Listening to stories provides a read aloud model as they listen to new vocabulary.
There are many benefits to using iPods as a listening center. It is a fun way that exposes the students to literacy without the pressure of having to read aloud. They can look at the pictures and follow along and listen to intonation and the various creative voices used throughout the story.
