Story For Us Día De Los Muertos

Help me give my students Crayon Halloween shirts, candy, books "The Day the Crayons Quit" and "Love from the Crayons." Also, to celebrate the Day of the dead to celebrate Halloween in two different ways of integrating cultural.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school. My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

Story For Us "Día De Los Muertos" is a project I am excited about. I want to bring happiness to my students through culturally relevant instruction and celebration. With your help we will be able to get my students four books we would love to celebrate; "The Day the Crayons Quit" and "Love from the Crayons."

The Day The Crayons Quit, this is a really cute little book about how love comes in lots of different colors.

In this very short book, each page shares both positive and negative actions, feelings, and metaphors that are associated with a specific color of love. It’s a tiny package, but could be nicely used as a mentor text.

After reading these books we will be able to celebrate by having a celebration dressing up as the crayons. In addition to that, we will be able to celebrate on October 30th with a connection poem that they can write to describe how these texts influences their way of thinking about accepting everyone that is different and their culture. The. "Day of the Dead" and "I Remember Abuelito: A Day of the Dead Story / Yo Recuerdo a Abuelito: Un Cuento del Día de los Muertos" book is about the holiday, as the character's family as Mexican American. The illustrations are very pretty and styled like Mexican art. Students will be encouraged to look at the illustrations and look at pictures to imagine the families of the village walking at night to the cemetery to celebrate this holiday. I love this book and so will the children. It is a wonderful way to connect children to the Mexican culture and to give others an outlook of this beautiful tradition.
