My Students

My students come from low socioeconomic homes. Many of their parents are forced to work out-of-state to provide for their families while the children are raised solely by one or two elderly grandparents.

While they are with me, I focus on their strengths and interests.

I ensure I am creating a warm and loving environment by greeting them with a hug and complimenting them on their shoes, clothing and anything they feel proud of. I know they are faced with many hardships at home with much separation anxiety never knowing when they will see their parents next. But my classroom is a loving warm environment where they can relax and rely on me to always be there, to believe in them, cheering them on, in their learning endeavors.

My Project

This easel will make a huge difference to my students' learning and improve their school experience altogether. In our classroom, students love sharing their work with their peers, and we all learn from each others work. Unfortunately we do not have an easel for students to place the materials they want share with us, therefore, they place it on the floor. This easel would allow the students to illustrate their ideas on the dry erase side, or place their piece of work on the board with a magnet, to share with the class. It will also allow me to illustrate and model for the students on the board instead of a chart on the floor.

Students learn best by constructing their own knowledge.

This board also features a flannel side which would allow students to tell stories using felt pieces and placing them on the board as they tell the story. Storytelling benefits students communication skills and improves their overall vocabulary knowledge. We would use the board on a daily basis during our whole group meetings. Students will be able to share their work with others by placing their work on the easel. During story time we would utilize the board by using its flannel side to tell stories with felt props.
