My Students

For the majority of my students, coming to kindergarten was their first experience away from home and especially with school. My school is an A+ Arts Magnet Public School, meaning that students will learn math, reading, science and social studies with a technology, art, dance, and music integration.

This helps make learning much more interesting, even when it's difficult and helps to bring in other students to our low-income community.

The entire school is a Title I school that receives free breakfast and lunch. We are trying to give these kids what they need.

I want my students actively trying new and difficult learning activities, rather than shying away from them. My top priority is to make learning a positive experience for every student so that they believe they can be successful. But, this presents a problem when resources are limited.

My Project

Kindergarten has become very academic. Five year old children are learning the alphabet letters & sounds, to read & comprehend a story, numbers to twenty, to count to 100, to add & subtract, and so very much more! It's very sad! Most of the youngsters in kindergarten, have not had the opportunity to gain the social skills that kindergarten used to focus upon: sharing, working with others, correct use of pencils, crayons, scissors, and using their imagination. Currently, at my school, we use our A+ Arts model to incorporate these skills.

Actress Sandra Bullock vocalized that she doesn't want an opportunity to go missing because of her lack of organization.

I feel that way about my classroom - I don't want students to miss out on creating their premier masterpiece because they couldn't locate the materials that were needed due to lack of order.

I want to rearrange my classroom and offer an "Art Corner". The black Seville Classics 15-Drawer Organizer Cart will be stocked with various art supplies such as glue, tissue paper, collage items, sticky cubes, ink pads, pipe cleaners, etc. The Sterilite 60 Quart ClearView Latch Wheeled Boxes will be the perfect spot to keep construction paper nice and neat. The wheels will make it easy to roll under the table and out of the way. I'm planning to use the Sterilite 30 Quart Ultra Latch Boxes and the Sterilite 6 Quart Storage Boxes for housing items like our musical instruments, dress-up costumes, and other dramatic play pieces. It's important to me that this area to be extremely child-centered and easy to use for the students. In the words of Mrs. Bullock, I don't want any of my darlings to have an opportunity go missing due to lack of organization in our "Art Corner"!
