Storing Student Work On External Drives

My students need external drives with capacity to save large files of their work throughout the year.

My Students

We need to continue working on a project! Sometimes the same computer isn't always available. What's a student to do? That's where external drives can save the day. If we are able to save student files on external drives, then it won't matter which machine we use or where we continue our work.

We are a New York City public school in the borough of Queens, one of the most diverse areas of the nation.

Our school community is comprised of an international population and we speak different languages representing many cultures. The parents of our students have very high expectations and understand the role technology plays in a first rate 21st century education. My students are fifth graders and it is amazing how facile they are with the latest technology, but they rely on our school to provide those opportunities to learn with the latest innovations. Our school is located in a quiet neighborhood despite the fact that we are still part of New York City. We have a close knit high achieving community that recognizes the role of excellence in a competitive academic environment and so we are charged with the responsibility of bringing the best to our motivated international students.

My Project

Today multimedia can include graphics, video, 3D design and any number of file formats. We work with them all but that means we need a way to store those files so that they are portable. Students may work on different computers in different places and we need the flexibility to continue developing projects without the constraint of using the same desktop each time. Our best hope is to use flash drives and portable external drives that can store large or small files. Video files are especially large and require an external drive with the storage space to hold edited versions of student work. We are requesting both large and small capacity drives that are modestly priced so that we can save work and continue projects on any computer that is available. The Passport drive and smaller flash drives are just the solution to meet our needs.

As students assume more responsibility for their learning and they increasingly use technology to develop projects, they need the appropriate tools.

We are always looking for a flash or external drive on which to store large files which often have to be transferred to other hardware. External and flash drives, once convenient, are now essential and would save so much instructional time if they were available to help us store student work.
