Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students in grades TK through third grade at our school are curious, creative, and eager to learn. They love listening to stories and sharing their ideas during read-aloud time. Many of our students come from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Latino, Asian, and African American families. They bring rich experiences, languages, and traditions that make our school community vibrant and special. What makes my students especially unique is the pride they take in their cultures and the thoughtful connections they make between stories and their own lives. When students feel seen and valued in the classroom, they become more confident readers, thinkers, and learners.

The diverse read-aloud books in this project will help students see themselves reflected in the stories we share.

These books will serve as both mirrors and windows—mirrors where students recognize their own identities, languages, and family experiences, and windows that allow them to learn about the lives of others. Having a classroom library filled with culturally representative books will increase engagement during read-alouds and support literacy development such as listening comprehension, vocabulary, and meaningful discussions. My goal for this project is to build a collection of diverse stories that inspire a love of reading, strengthen students’ sense of identity, and help all children develop empathy and respect for different cultures and experiences.
