Stories to help the Kinders deal with BIG emotions.
Help me give my students the tools that they need to help them socially and emotionally. A lot of my students are coming to me not knowing how to deal with social situations, and these books can help.
I teach in a wonderful school with fantastic kids. We work hard to have students achieve a great deal in 173 school days. I teach a group of diverse kindergarten students, 24 five and six year olds to be exact. My students come to me at so many different academic levels, and I work tirelessly to reach them all at their academic and social level.
My students are amazing children who are mostly just starting their careers in school as kindergarteners this year.
Our school is 80% free or reduced price lunch, and we are in the heart of the city. We have a very diverse population of kids. Some of our students come to school not knowing any English, and by the end of the year they are speaking their home language and English very well. Our kids love to learn and we love to teach them.
My Project
The past few years I have noticed a big change in my students. I have more and more kids who are really struggling socially and emotionally in school. I see kids who don't know what to do in social situations and instead of acting appropriately will act out physically or in other negative ways.
We need stories to help us learn how to act appropriately in social settings.
Learning how to act appropriately socially with others has become a big part of kindergarten and we need books to help support this. I also need books where the kids can see themselves in the characters.
Another part of this project that we have a need for are conversation starters. The social-emotional prompts set can help the five and six year olds in my classroom discuss important situations and how to react to them. These prompts can also help us start some much needed writing ideas. When we write and illustrate what we are learning about we learn so much more and remember what we learn.
Not only will these books help us socially and emotionally there are also so very many strategies that are in them for learning how to read and how to understand books.
