Stories That Build Compassion: Seeing Through Someone Else’s Eyes

Help me give my students books that teach compassion, empathy, and kindness so they can better understand others and take action to make our school a more caring place.

FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Lee-Angry's classroom raised $752

My Project

I love that my students are thoughtful, curious, and eager to grow—not just academically, but emotionally. They care deeply about fairness and doing what’s right, and I want to nurture that by helping them become more compassionate, reflective individuals who can make a difference in their community.

This project will provide my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students with high-quality picture books—Those Shoes, A Bike Like Sergio’s, and I Walk With Vanessa—each centered around empathy, kindness, and doing the right thing, even when it’s hard.

After reading, students will choose one book and write a short expository essay explaining how they would show compassion if they were in that scenario and how they plan to show compassion throughout the school year. This writing activity will allow them to analyze the emotions and struggles of the characters and connect those lessons to real-life situations they may encounter.

Students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person by discussing the characters’ challenges, feelings, and decisions. They’ll learn to work toward alleviating suffering in others by identifying when a peer might feel left out, hurt, or unsupported—and taking small, meaningful actions to help. I will measure their understanding through their written responses, classroom discussions, and how they begin to show kindness and empathy in their daily interactions. This project will help us build a culture where compassion is not just taught, but lived.
