My Project

My students, who are eleventh and twelfth graders enrolled in Advanced Placement Environmental Science, approach environmental issues with zeal, eager to delve into complex topics and seek solutions. They show genuine concern for the impact of environmental degradation on communities, particularly those affected by phenomena like subsidence and sea-level rise. Despite facing daunting environmental challenges, they remain committed to finding innovative solutions and advocating for environmental justice.

I chose the book "Nowhere Better Than Here" because it is relevant to our curriculum and resonates with the themes and issues central to current environmental concerns.

Its focus on the struggles and realities of coastal towns experiencing sinking land, population displacement, government inaction, and cultural loss while providing a compelling narrative framework for meaningful discussions and deepening students' engagement with the subject matter. Moreover, the book's narrative approach humanizes the environmental issues we study, making them more accessible and relatable to students. By incorporating diverse perspectives and personal stories, it encourages students to consider the human dimensions of environmental problems and inspires them to explore innovative solutions.

I believe that this book will enrich our classroom discussions, inspire critical thinking, and empower students to become informed, empathetic, and proactive agents of change in addressing environmental challenges facing coastal communities.
